Friday, 10 January 2025, at the Cambridge Business and Professional Club luncheon, we heard an incredibly moving and motivational speech by Tom Walston 🇺🇦, Head of Business Services at the University of Cambridge and founder of the Convoy4Ukraine initiative.
Tom shared his journey from hosting a Ukrainian family to leading a mission that saves lives in Ukraine every day. When the Russian invasion began, Tom and his wife opened their home as part of the “Homes for Ukraine” program, welcoming a Ukrainian family. This act of kindness became the foundation for something much greater.
In the summer of 2023, while volunteering at a field kitchen in Lviv, Tom recognized an urgent need for reliable vehicles in war zones. Transportation is critical for delivering aid, evacuating civilians, and supporting rebuilding efforts. Inspired, he launched Convoy4Ukraine, a project that refurbishes old but reliable 4×4 vehicles and delivers them to Ukraine.
Whilst volunteering, Tom also met volunteers from Trim, Ireland, who were delivering 4x4s and aid to Ukraine. Together with their Irish colleagues, Stockhouse, Convoy4Ukraine has delivered 75+ vehicles and ambulances, running convoys from Ireland and the UK to maximize support for those in need.
Tom’s speech wasn’t just about logistics; it was a heartfelt reminder of the human cost of war. Since the Russian invasion, at least 20,000 Ukrainian children have been forcibly deported into Russian territory, with the true number of displaced children likely reaching hundreds of thousands. These are not just numbers—they are stories of families torn apart and lives forever changed.
Through his words, Tom reminded us that every small action can make a profound difference. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness, we all have the power to contribute to something bigger than ourselves.
We left the luncheon inspired, motivated, and reminded of the power of community. Convoy4Ukraine is proof that when compassion meets action, lives can be saved, and hope can be restored.
